The Nigerian Presidency has rejected the latest claims made by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who alleged that he is under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for unverified financial dealings involving Lagos State.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Presidency described Atiku’s allegations as "false" and a continuation of his habit of relying on "social media gossip" rather than credible sources. The statement expressed disappointment that a political figure of Atiku’s stature would promote such baseless claims in a bid to remain politically relevant.
“The claims are infantile and a transparent attempt to divert attention from his political setbacks,” the statement read. “Rather than contributing constructively to national discourse, Atiku has chosen to indulge in unfounded accusations.”
The statement further emphasized that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is focused on addressing the nation’s critical challenges and advancing his administration's growth agenda, insisting that the President will not engage in petty political distractions.
Since his defeat in the 2023 presidential election, Atiku has failed to adopt the dignified role of an elder statesman, the Presidency added, pointing out that his recent actions were an attempt to create unnecessary political drama.
The Presidency also reiterated that the EFCC operates independently and any insinuation of external influence on its work undermines the agency's professionalism and the rule of law.
The statement concluded by urging Atiku to redirect his efforts into initiatives that promote unity, economic development, and democratic stability—qualities Nigeria urgently needs.
The Presidency reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability, and national development.
