President Bola Tinubu has announced that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway will provide improved access to production and marketing centres for 30 million people. Speaking on Sunday in Lagos during the inauguration of the 700km highway project, Tinubu highlighted the significant benefits of the project as part of the commemoration of his first year in office.

Tinubu stated, “During the construction period, the road will provide direct employment for thousands of people and indirect employment for tens of thousands more. Economic opportunities for millions are being opened.” He emphasized that the highway would accelerate community development and bring economic growth closer to the people.

The Federal Government began constructing the highway in March, designed to span nine states with two spurs leading to northern states. However, the project faced criticism and scrutiny, particularly regarding the timing and the demolition of buildings. Last Thursday, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, revealed that 750 houses marked for demolition would be compensated with N2.75 billion, though stakeholders argued that the compensation was insufficient.

In response to the criticism, President Tinubu appealed for public understanding, especially from those whose properties and livelihoods would be impacted. “We all make some sacrifices to enable our country to grow. Be assured that this government is compassionate and will do the utmost to offer succour through compensation,” he said.

Describing the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as a symbol of hope, unity, and prosperity, Tinubu highlighted its potential to connect communities across nine states, boost trade and commerce, and create new opportunities. He compared the project to Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way, a 2,600km road that generates significant tourism revenue.

Tinubu also stressed the importance of safety, sustainability, and social responsibility in the project, urging stakeholders to collaborate for the benefit of all. He commended the Minister of Works and the Ministry's staff for their efforts in ensuring quality work from the contractors.

The project will link Lagos to Cross River, passing through Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom states. Umahi noted that the highway would be constructed using concrete pavement and revealed the establishment of a committee to assess and compensate landowners affected by the construction.

Tinubu concluded by expressing gratitude to key stakeholders, including the Chairman of HiTech, Gilbert Chagoury, Engineer Roland, and Aliko Dangote, for their support and investment. He emphasized the administration's determination to see the project through, ensuring it becomes a lasting legacy for future generations.
