President Tinubu Orders Swift Settlement of State House Electricity Debt

Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has instructed the prompt settlement of the outstanding electricity bill owed to the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC). This directive, as revealed in a statement by the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, follows the successful reconciliation of accounts between the State House Management and AEDC. Contrary to AEDC's initial claim of N923 million in debt, the State House's actual outstanding bill is N342,352,217.46, according to a letter from AEDC management to the State House Permanent Secretary dated February 14, 2024.

With both parties satisfied with the reconciliation, Chief of Staff to the President, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, has assured that the debt will be settled before the week ends. In light of this development, Chief of Staff urged other Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to reconcile their accounts with AEDC and clear their electricity bills.

Following AEDC's 10-day ultimatum to MDAs to settle their outstanding bills, the company threatened to disconnect those who fail to pay within the stipulated time frame. The list of defaulting MDAs includes the Ministry of Power, DSS, Presidential Villa, Chief of Defence Staff barracks, and military formations, among others, owing significant amounts totaling billions of naira. It is important for MDAs to heed this call and clear their debts promptly to avoid disconnection and ensure uninterrupted electricity supply.
