President Tinubu Resumes Duties After Working Vacation Amid Fiscal Responsibility Concerns

President Bola Tinubu has officially resumed his duties at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja after a two-week working vacation in the United Kingdom and France. Photographs released from the State House on Monday captured the President at his desk receiving a briefing from Zacch Adedeji, Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service. Tinubu's return comes as he continues to navigate pressing matters concerning the nation’s fiscal policies.

During his vacation, which began on October 2, Tinubu focused on reflecting on his administration’s economic reforms, as indicated by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. Following his time in the UK, the President traveled to Paris for an important engagement, as shared by his Senior Special Assistant, Ibrahim Masari, on social media.

Upon his return, the President faces mounting concerns regarding the timely presentation of the 2025 appropriation bill. The House of Representatives recently reminded him of the Fiscal Responsibility Act, which stipulates that the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) must be submitted to the National Assembly at least three months prior to the annual budget. This legal requirement aims to ensure that the government's fiscal policies are thoroughly evaluated and integrated into the budget preparation process.

With only a few months left in the 2024 fiscal year, the House has raised questions about the feasibility of adequately considering and passing the MTEF, Fiscal Strategy Paper, and 2025 Budget Estimates before the year concludes. This situation underscores the urgency for the administration to streamline its budgeting processes and maintain transparency in fiscal planning.
