The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan, have arrived in Nigeria on a private visit to explore the possibility of the country hosting the Invictus Games. Their visit comes at the invitation of the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa.

Upon their arrival in Abuja, the royal couple is set to attend basketball and volleyball matches, as well as meet with local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Abuja and Lagos. Meghan will also co-host an event on 'Women in Leadership' with Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the director-general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

The Invictus Games, an international multi-sport event founded by Prince Harry, aims to rehabilitate wounded, injured, and ill servicemen and women, whether serving or veterans. The games offer participants the challenge of competing in sports events similar to the Paralympics, providing them with a platform for recovery and empowerment.

Last year, Nigeria participated in the Invictus Games for the first time, emerging as the only African representative at the event and winning gold and bronze medals. The Nigerian government, represented by Mohammed Baduru, the Minister of Defence, has expressed keen interest in hosting the games, seeing it as an opportunity to support the recovery of its personnel who have been engaged in the fight against Boko Haram since 2009.
