Prosecution Alleges Ex-CBN Governor Emefiele Awarded Contracts to Family

Emefiele

Michael Agboro, the seventh prosecution witness, testified that suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele awarded contracts to companies owned by his wife and brother-in-law. Emefiele is facing a 20-count amended charge by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at the FCT High Court in Maitama, Abuja, including criminal breach of trust, forgery, and conspiracy.

Agboro, an investigator with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), was cross-examined by Emefiele’s counsel, Mathew Burkaa, SAN. Agboro claimed Emefiele conferred unfair advantages on Saadatu Yaro, a public officer under him, as well as his wife and brother-in-law. He confirmed that Emefiele approved the contracts.

During the investigation, it was found that Emefiele was not a director, shareholder, or signatory in the companies April 1616 Nigeria Ltd and Architekon Nigeria Ltd, and there was no evidence of payments made to him by these firms. The investigation team included members from the ICPC, EFCC, Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB), and the Department of State Service (DSS).

Justice Hamza Muazu adjourned the case until Tuesday for the re-examination of the witness.
