The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) on Wednesday raised concerns over the use of lethal force against Nigerians participating in the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests. This comes after reports that a soldier shot and killed 16-year-old Ismail Mohammed during a protest in Samaru, Zaria, Kaduna State on Tuesday.
The incident occurred when Nigerian Army troops were called to disperse hoodlums burning tyres and attacking security personnel in Samaru. In the confrontation, a soldier fired a warning shot, which tragically hit and killed Mohammed. The Nigerian Army confirmed that the soldier involved has been arrested and is undergoing interrogation.
Earlier, Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun stated that security operatives managing the protests did not use live ammunition. However, the PRP National Chairman, Falalu Bello, emphasized the need for a full investigation and accountability for the use of live ammunition against peaceful protesters. He urged the National Assembly to legislate rules of engagement that prohibit the use of live ammunition in future protests.
Bello condemned the rioters who infiltrated peaceful protests in states like Kano and Kaduna, causing destruction and theft. He also criticized the flying of Russian flags and calls for a military takeover, advocating instead for change through democratic means. He urged Nigerian youth, who make up 67% of registered voters, to vote out the current government in the next election and bring in a new administration that prioritizes good governance.
Bello reiterated that the military should focus on its constitutional duties of protecting Nigeria's territorial integrity and assisting the police when necessary. He encouraged Nigerians to use their voting power to effect change and hold the government accountable.
