Rivers State Sole Administrator, Ibok-Ete Ibas, has requested additional time from the National Assembly’s Ad-hoc Committee to adequately prepare a detailed briefing on the ongoing situation in the state, citing the delicate security and political climate under the current state of emergency.
Addressing the committee at the National Assembly on Friday, Ibas acknowledged the committee’s leadership and its essential role in preserving the integrity of Nigeria's democracy. He began his statement by expressing respect for the committee's work and the importance of its role in upholding constitutional values.
“I deeply regret my inability to attend earlier engagements with this esteemed committee,” Ibas said. He attributed his absence to the pressing governance demands he faced while managing the state under emergency rule, noting that the delay was not a sign of disrespect but due to unforeseen public holidays and weekends.
Ibas described the situation in Rivers as “relatively calm” but emphasized its fragility, requiring careful handling to maintain stability. He stressed the need for more time to ensure that the committee receives a thorough and well-prepared report, underscoring the complexity of governing under such extraordinary circumstances.
“I remain fully committed to cooperating with the committee,” he assured, expressing gratitude to both the lawmakers and the media for their support of the federal government’s efforts. The committee is expected to review Ibas’s request and decide on the next steps for the oversight of Rivers State's governance during this transitional period.
