Rivers State Governor Fubara Reveals Debt Burden from Wike’s Administration

Fubara

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has revealed a substantial debt burden left by the previous administration, particularly due to the escalating costs of projects initiated by his predecessor, former Governor Nyesom Wike. Fubara disclosed that many contractors were demanding outstanding payments running into billions of naira, which Wike could not settle before handing over last year.

Speaking during the inauguration of the Aleto-Ogale-Ebubu-Eteo Road (Old Bori Road) in Eleme Local Government Area, Fubara stated that the state government would be exhibiting white papers specifying the costs of projects when they are commissioned. He emphasized his administration's commitment to transparency and accountability, noting that he had been pushed to reveal the financial challenges faced by the state.

Abia State Governor Alex Otti, who inaugurated the project, cautioned against arrogance in public office and emphasized the importance of humility and service to the people. Fubara commended Otti for his integrity and leadership style, highlighting the need for leaders to focus on improving the welfare and interests of the people.

Fubara also mentioned plans to probe the administration of his predecessor, noting that he was Accountant-General of the state during that period. He expressed determination to address the issue of full wage agreements implementation across the board before the new National Minimum Wage regime comes into effect, to avoid similar situations in other states.
