The Rivers State Police Command reported a tragic incident where gunmen ambushed officers during a stop-and-search duty at the Eliozu Flyover in Obio/Akpo Local Government Area. The attack, which occurred on Wednesday night, resulted in the death of an inspector. According to Grace Iringe-Koko, the command's spokesperson, the assailants arrived in a carton-colored Sienna bus with tinted glasses from the Rumuodumaya axis near Port Harcourt. While the police neutralized one attacker wearing a mask, others escaped.
In a statement released on Thursday, Iringe-Koko expressed deep sadness over the incident and announced that the command had launched an investigation. The police team, conducting routine stop-and-search, was ambushed by unidentified hoodlums who opened fire, resulting in the tragic loss of the inspector. Despite the attack, the police responded bravely, managing to neutralize one assailant, while others escaped.
Commissioner of Police Olatunji Disu reiterated the force's commitment to ensuring peace and safeguarding citizens. He warned that perpetrators of violence against police or citizens will face the full weight of the law. The command extends condolences to the family and colleagues of the fallen inspector, vowing that his sacrifice will not be in vain.
