At least six people were killed, and many more injured, following a Russian missile attack on the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy, Acting Mayor Artem Kobzar reported on Sunday.

In a video shared on Telegram, Kobzar stood in front of a multi-story residential building that had been destroyed by the strike, as rescue workers searched through the rubble in darkness for survivors.

The attack comes in the aftermath of one of the most intense Russian air raids on Ukraine since the conflict began. Overnight, Russia launched a barrage of drones, rockets, and cruise missiles targeting various sites, with critical energy facilities among the main objectives.

The latest assault highlights the continued escalation in hostilities, as Ukrainian officials work to address the growing humanitarian and infrastructural crisis caused by the attacks.
