Sanusi Lamido, the reinstated Emir of Kano, has arrived at the Kano State Government House to receive his letter of appointment and resume his duties as the new emir. He arrived in Kano on Thursday night to a homecoming reception and is expected to participate in a mini-durbar ceremony at the Africa House in Kano Government House before proceeding to the Nasarawa Emir’s palace. He will then lead the jumu’at (Friday) prayers at the Kano Central mosque located at the palace in Kofar Kudu.
Sanusi Lamido's return to the throne comes after a four-year hiatus following the signing of the Kano State Emirates Councils (Repeal) Bill 2024 by Governor Yusuf. The Governor also deposed five emirs appointed by Ganduje and gave them a 48-hour ultimatum to vacate their official residences and palaces, a directive they are expected to comply with.
However, the Federal High Court in Kano has issued an order stopping the Kano State Government from enforcing the Kano State Emirate Council Repeal Law. The order was granted in an application by Alhaji Aminu Babba Dan Agundi, the Sarkin Dawaki Babba of the Kano Emirate. The respondents in the fundamental rights case include the Kano State Government, the House of Assembly, the Speaker, the Attorney-General, the Commissioner of Police, the Inspector-General of Police, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the State Security Service.
