Sanwo-Olu Backs Hamzat as Preferred Successor for 2027 Lagos Governorship

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has formally endorsed his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as his preferred successor for the 2027 governorship election.

The endorsement was announced on Monday after a closed-door meeting at Lagos House, Marina, where Hamzat declared his intention to contest the state’s top job before members of the State Executive Council and key party stakeholders.

Among those present at the meeting were members of the Governor’s Advisory Council, including Musiliu Obanikoro and Ganiyu Solomon.

Speaking with journalists after the meeting, Sanwo-Olu described the decision as unanimous, noting that stakeholders were in agreement about Hamzat’s readiness and capability to lead Lagos.

“We received the Deputy Governor, who came with a strong delegation to formally inform us of his intention to run. It was a unanimous decision that he is fit and well-prepared for the job,” the governor said.

Sanwo-Olu highlighted Hamzat’s experience and their close working relationship over the past seven years, praising his integrity, loyalty, and commitment to governance.

He also acknowledged the role of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in shaping their political journey and leadership path.

Describing Hamzat as a leader who has been groomed for the role, the governor said, “He has been built for this job from day one. We believe he deserves the opportunity to lead this state.”

The meeting, according to him, was part of ongoing consultations within the ruling All Progressives Congress, as political alignments begin to take shape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The endorsement signals an early move by the party’s leadership in Lagos to consolidate support and position a preferred candidate well ahead of the race.
