The Senate has praised President Bola Tinubu for approving the long-awaited dualisation of the Akwanga (Nasarawa)–Jos (Plateau)–Bauchi–Gombe highway, a project that has been pending for nearly 40 years.
The commendation came on Tuesday during plenary after Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi) raised a Point of Order, describing the approval as a major relief for communities that have suffered years of neglect along the corridor.
Ningi recalled that the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, had recently announced that the Federal Government had awarded the contract for the dualisation of the road.
According to him, the highway cuts across key North-Central and North-East states and remains the only major federal corridor in Nigeria that has not been upgraded to a dual carriageway.
He said the project would finally address decades of abandonment experienced by residents of Plateau, Bauchi, Gombe and Adamawa states.
Ningi also urged the Senate Committees on Works and Finance to closely supervise the project and ensure proper funding so that it can be completed without delay.

Adding his voice, Senator Danjuma Goje (APC, Gombe) also commended the President for responding to the long-standing demands of the region. He expressed hope that the dualisation would eventually be extended from Gombe to Maiduguri.
The Akwanga–Jos–Bauchi–Gombe highway is a vital route linking the North-Central and North-East regions and has been known for frequent road accidents, security concerns and economic losses due to its poor condition.
