The Senate has confirmed Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) following a thorough screening on Wednesday. The confirmation makes Kekere-Ekun the second female CJN in Nigeria’s history, succeeding Justice Aloma Mariam Mukhtar. During the session, Kekere-Ekun pledged zero tolerance for corruption and emphasized the importance of judicial integrity.

In her address to the Senate, Kekere-Ekun vowed to fast-track petitions and insulate the judiciary from external influences. She also promised to advocate for improved infrastructure and welfare for the judiciary. She highlighted the need to strengthen institutions and discourage post-election litigation.

Justice Kekere-Ekun was nominated by President Bola Tinubu, whose letter seeking her confirmation was read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Tinubu had previously sworn her in as acting CJN following the retirement of Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.

Born on May 7, 1958, Kekere-Ekun's legal career began at the University of Lagos, and she was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1981. Her historic confirmation further solidifies her role as a leading figure in Nigeria’s judiciary.
