Senate Leader Urges NLC and TUC to Accept FG’s Minimum Wage Offer Above N60,000

Senate

Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele of the APC, representing Ekiti Central, has urged the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to accept the federal government's new minimum wage offer, which exceeds N60,000. This plea comes amid ongoing negotiations for a new minimum wage bill, which President Bola Tinubu has promised to present to the National Assembly.

In his Eid-el-Kabir message, Bamidele called for a spirit of dialogue and peace in these negotiations, emphasizing the need for Nigerians to exhibit patriotism and unity during these challenging socio-political times.

Bamidele highlighted some of the achievements of President Tinubu's administration and stressed the importance of collective efforts to improve the country's economic conditions. He noted that while the government had offered a 100 percent increase to N60,000, the NLC and TUC rejected the proposal, leading to a two-day strike. He urged the labor unions to consider the national interest and accept the government's forthcoming concessions.

“The federal government has conceded to N60,000, which translates to a 100 percent increase. But both NLC and TUC turned down this offer, leading to a two-day industrial action. The federal government has promised to make more concessions in this respect. As the federal government reveals its new offer, I plead with the organised labour to accept it in the national interest,” Bamidele stated.

Bamidele also called on Nigerians of all religions and ethnicities to support the Tinubu administration's efforts to navigate the nation through its current challenges. He emphasized that no nation could achieve rebirth without the unwavering support of its citizens, regardless of their backgrounds.

Assuring that the administration would work tirelessly to alleviate economic hardships and restore national pride, Bamidele encouraged Muslims to emulate the love and good neighborliness exemplified by Prophet Mohammed during this festive season. He underscored the necessity of security and stability for the government's reengineering efforts to bear fruit.

“Just to mention a few among ongoing projects like the 700 kilometers Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the establishment of N50 Billion Pulako Initiative, and the annual recruitment of 30,000 new police personnel are Key Performance Indicators of this government,” Bamidele noted. He highlighted other initiatives such as the state of emergency in agriculture, the National Agricultural Development Fund with N100 billion, and various agricultural programs aimed at ensuring food security.

Bamidele concluded by urging Muslim faithful to pray for the country's leaders, seeking divine wisdom and understanding to manage the significant challenges of governance, especially in the current global economic climate.
