Senate Passes Vote of Confidence in President Akpabio Amid Controversy

Akpabio

The Senate has unanimously passed a vote of confidence in its President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, during Thursday’s plenary. The motion was moved by Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele (Ekiti Central) and seconded by Deputy Minority Leader, Olalere Oyewumi (Osun West).

This resolution follows a statement made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP, Kogi Central), who was recently suspended from the Senate. Akpoti-Uduaghan addressed the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in New York, claiming she was suspended for raising allegations of sexual harassment against Akpabio. She also filed contempt charges against Akpabio and others related to her six-month suspension without pay.

The Senate has urged Nigerians to disregard the allegations, stating that the matter is already under judicial review. Referencing Order 40 of its standing rules, the Senate emphasized that it could not interfere in a case currently before the court.
