Shekarau: Focus on Credibility, Not Regional Politics for Nigeria’s Presidency

Shekarau

Former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau has urged Nigerians to prioritize the credibility of presidential candidates over regional affiliations. Addressing debates about power returning to the northern region in 2027, Shekarau argued that governance should transcend sectional considerations. “Our concern should be on the quality of candidates presented by all parties,” he stated during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.

Shekarau emphasized the need for political parties to present capable leaders. “All the parties should provide credible candidates for Nigerians to make the best choice. If you give us evils, we will simply choose the lesser evil,” he said. The former governor called on Nigerians to focus on electing leaders with integrity and vision for the country, regardless of their geopolitical zone.

Turning to the state of the nation, Shekarau criticized the Tinubu administration, urging it to return to the basics of governance. Referring to the widespread protests against harsh economic conditions, he described them as a “clear message” from Nigerians. “The agitation was a national issue, not regional. It’s time for the government to reassess its policies and address the people’s demands,” he advised.

The protests, which began on August 1, were sparked by economic hardships following the removal of the fuel subsidy and the naira's floating. Initially peaceful, the demonstrations escalated, resulting in the destruction of property, particularly in northern Nigeria. Shekarau stressed that these events reflect growing public dissatisfaction and the need for urgent government action.
