Rescue officials have recovered the bodies of three victims of the recent boat accident in Kojiyo, Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State, even as search operations continue for others still missing.
Officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) confirmed that the bodies were discovered at separate locations in Kojiyo, Bare, and a village in Wurno Local Government Area. They have since been buried according to Islamic rites.
“We recovered three bodies in three different locations and the three of them have been buried according to Islamic rites,” officials stated.
Government Response
In a show of solidarity, the Sokoto State Government dispatched a delegation led by Deputy Governor Idris Muhammad-Gobir to Kojiyo community.
While consoling the bereaved families, Gobir announced a donation of ₦20 million and 100 bags of grains to support affected households. He also assured residents that the government would fast-track completion of the ongoing bridge construction in the area to ease transportation and improve safety.
The deputy governor further disclosed plans to procure motorised boats and distribute life jackets across six riverine local government areas to prevent future tragedies.
“Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s administration is deeply concerned about the safety of our people. We will not relent until we put in place measures that guarantee safe and reliable transportation across our waterways,” Gobir said.
