SSANU Ends Warning Strike: Demands Government Action on Salaries and Agreements

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has called off its seven-day warning strike to allow the government more time to address their grievances. The announcement was made by the association's president, Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim, during a virtual stakeholders forum organized by the Education Writers Association of Nigeria (EWAN) in Lagos.

The strike, which began on March 18, was in response to the withholding of salaries for four months and the non-implementation of a 2009 agreement with the Federal Government. Despite a recent meeting with government representatives in Abuja, no concrete solutions were reached, prompting the decision to suspend the strike.

Mr. Ibrahim emphasized that the strike had severely impacted university activities, highlighting the crucial roles SSANU members play in campus operations. He warned that failure to meet their demands would result in further action, stressing the union's right to strike as a means of expressing grievances.

The union leader criticized the government's handling of the education sector, stating that strikes were a last resort to address systemic issues. He called for equal treatment of university workers and emphasized the importance of adequate funding to prevent future crises in the education sector.
