SSANU Threatens Nationwide Industrial Action Over Withheld Salaries

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has threatened to disrupt university activities nationwide if the Federal Government does not pay the withheld salaries of its members.

This comes after the government excluded SSANU members from the payment of withheld salaries, which began with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Monday.

ASUU's chairperson at the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Prof. Gbolahan Bolarin, confirmed that payment had started for ASUU members. The salaries were withheld when former President Muhammadu Buhari invoked a 'No Work, No Pay policy' against ASUU and SSANU, who embarked on an eight-month strike in 2022.

President Bola Tinubu approved the release of four of the eight months' withheld salaries for ASUU in October 2023. However, SSANU's National President, Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim, expressed dissatisfaction with SSANU's exclusion from the payment, calling it a great injustice. He stated that while they were not against ASUU being paid, SSANU members also deserved their salaries.

Ibrahim revealed that SSANU members would meet to decide on their next course of action. The National Vice-President of SSANU, Abdussobur Salaam, warned that the Joint Action Committee of NASU and SSANU should not be blamed if university operations are disrupted, citing the government's failure to address their grievances.
