Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu has confirmed that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has handed him a new two-year contract, extending his stay with the team until 2027.
Madugu made the announcement on Tuesday after the Super Falcons sealed qualification for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with a 1-1 draw against Benin Republic in Abeokuta — advancing 3-1 on aggregate.
“I have been given a new contract from October 1, 2025, to October 1, 2027,” Madugu revealed during the post-match press conference. The coach, who led Nigeria to their 10th WAFCON title earlier this year, expressed mixed feelings about his team’s performance.
“The draw didn’t come as a surprise because we knew it was going to be a tough game,” he said. “It wasn’t easy based on what we already knew about the Beninoise team. However, I want to apologise to Nigerians for not meeting their expectations. Every time the Super Falcons play, there’s always pressure to deliver great results and performances — but sometimes there are off days, and today was one of them.

The match saw Ashleigh Plumptre score her first-ever goal for Nigeria, heading in from Esther Okoronkwo’s corner in the 12th minute. The visitors, however, found an equaliser early in the second half, putting pressure on the Falcons, who eventually held on for the result.
Despite the draw, the Super Falcons’ qualification for the 2026 WAFCON, scheduled to take place from March 17 to April 3, has been confirmed — extending their dominance as Africa’s most successful women’s football team.
