The Super Falcons of Nigeria are poised to potentially face off against powerhouse teams Spain, Brazil, and Japan in the women's football tournament at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. This opportunity comes after the team's last qualification for the Olympics 16 years ago during the 2008 tournament in Beijing.
However, Nigeria must first overcome one final hurdle by defeating South Africa in the final round of the African qualifiers. The games are scheduled to be played over two legs between April 1 and 9. Meanwhile, in the other African qualifying game, Morocco will face Zambia for a chance to secure a spot in the tournament.
The women's football tournament promises intense competition, especially in Groups B and C. Group B features heavyweights USA and Germany, while Group C showcases a clash between Brazil and Spain. Host France, seeking to emulate the USA's feat in 1996 as the only host country to win gold, will contend with holders Canada, Colombia, and joint host of the 2023 Women's World Cup, New Zealand, in Group A.
The women's tournament will kick off on July 25, a day before the Olympic Games' opening ceremony, and will culminate with the final in Paris on August 10. The top two teams from each group, along with the two best third-placed teams, will advance to the quarterfinals.
