Supreme Court Sets March 10 for Hearing in PDP Secretaryship Dispute

The Supreme Court has scheduled March 10 for the hearing of the appeal filed by embattled PDP National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu. The decision came from a five-member panel, led by Justice Ibrahim Saulawa, which granted Anyanwu’s motion for an accelerated hearing.

The dispute arose after the Court of Appeal in Enugu upheld a High Court ruling that removed Anyanwu from his position, declaring Chief Ude Okoye as the legitimate PDP National Secretary. Justice Ridwan Abdullahi, delivering the appellate court’s lead judgment, ruled that Anyanwu's appeal lacked merit, as he violated the PDP constitution by retaining the National Secretary position after contesting the 2024 Imo State governorship election.

Unsettled by the verdict, Anyanwu approached the Supreme Court, seeking to overturn the lower courts’ rulings and reinstate his claim as the authentic PDP National Secretary. He also requested an expedited hearing, citing the office’s critical party leadership role.

In Tuesday's ruling, the Supreme Court granted the motion for accelerated hearing and ordered the service of court processes on respondent Aniagu Emmanuel, who must file his reply within three days. Anyanwu was given two days to respond on points of law.

However, the apex court deferred hearing on Anyanwu’s motion for a stay of execution of the appellate court’s judgment.
