Suspected herdsmen have launched an attack on Agojeju Odo and Abejukolo communities in Omala local government area of Kogi state, resulting in the death of at least 19 people and the destruction of several houses. According to eyewitnesses in Lokoja, the incident occurred on Thursday when the bandits, believed to be on a reprisal mission, raided the two communities and inflicted widespread damage.
The bandits, who were reportedly engaged in a confrontation with Agatu militia in Benue state, expanded their attack to Agojeju Odo, Ajokpachi Odo, Bagaji, and surrounding areas. They destroyed farm produce and property in an apparent attempt to provoke further conflict.
A local resident, who tragically lost his wife and children in the attack, revealed that the herdsmen targeted the communities, accusing them of colluding with the Agatus against them. Another resident, speaking anonymously, called on the state governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, and security agencies to intervene, as the local police force had been overwhelmed by the invaders.
Kogi state police command's Public Relations Officer, SP William Aya, confirmed the incident, stating that 19 people were killed in the communal clashes. He reassured that security forces, including the police, counter-terrorism unit, and army, had been deployed to the area to restore peace. As of the time of reporting, many residents had fled the communities, and the affected areas were left in ruins.
