Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi is now awake and steadily recovering after being placed in a medically induced coma following a terrifying incident during Sunday’s Premier League clash against Leicester City.
The Nigerian international suffered an abdominal injury after colliding with the goalpost in a high-impact moment that silenced the City Ground. He underwent emergency surgery on Monday night, after which doctors placed him in a coma to reduce movement and regulate his heart rate during the critical phase of recovery.
Although the injury was not immediately considered life-threatening, the drastic step was taken to stabilize his condition and ensure full neurological recovery, according to Mail Online. The second phase of the procedure was completed on Wednesday, and Awoniyi is now conscious and recovering in hospital, surrounded by his family.
In the wake of the incident, Forest issued a strong rebuttal to media speculation surrounding club owner Evangelos Marinakis, who was seen storming onto the pitch at full-time. The club explained that Marinakis’ actions were driven by fear and urgency over Awoniyi’s condition, calling tabloid claims that he clashed with manager Nuno Espírito Santo “fake news.”
“Mr. Marinakis’ presence on the pitch was purely out of concern for the player’s wellbeing. Any report suggesting a confrontation with the manager is entirely fabricated,” the statement read.
The 26-year-old forward has been pivotal for Forest this season, and while a timeline for his return remains unclear, fans and teammates alike have flooded social media with messages of support and solidarity.
Awoniyi’s injury has not only raised fresh debates over player safety and pitch-side medical protocols, but also cast a spotlight on the emotional weight carried by club officials in critical moments.
Forest’s next few games are likely to proceed without their star striker, but the team remains focused on rallying around him as he begins his road to recovery.
