Tension in Kano: Armed Operatives Take Over Emir’s Palace

Kano

In an unexpected development, armed security operatives have taken control of the Kano Emir’s Palace at Kofar Kudu, restricting movement in and out of the premises since the early hours of Friday. The heightened security presence coincides with the scheduled visit of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II to accompany Alhaji Munir Sanusi, the newly-appointed Wamban Kano, to his district posting in Bichi.

The district of Bichi is one of the four emirates established during the administration of former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje but later dissolved by the current governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf. While the reasons for the tight security around the Kano and Bichi palaces remain unclear, armed personnel were seen restricting human and vehicular access to both locations.

Traditional rulers and titleholders stranded within the Kano Emir’s palace had to abandon their vehicles and walk to the central mosque for Friday prayers. Witnesses reported that security operatives maintained a firm presence, preventing visitors from accessing the palace even as the emir remained inside.

Efforts to reach Kano State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Haruna, for an official explanation have been unsuccessful as of this report. Residents and stakeholders remain on edge, awaiting clarity on the motive for the security buildup.

This development has raised concerns about the stability of the Kano traditional institution and its relationship with the state government following the recent political shifts affecting the emirate system.
