Tensions Rise as APC, Obi’s Supporters Clash Over Alleged Threats

The All Progressives Congress (APC) and supporters of Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi have locked horns over an alleged threat to the former Anambra State governor’s life. The controversy stemmed from an interview on Arise Television, where APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka accused Obi of "crossing the line" with his criticisms of President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Morka suggested that Obi’s remarks were inciting and warned that "he has coming to him whatever he gets."

Reacting to the comments, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, condemned the APC’s perceived intimidation of Obi and his associates. Tanko warned that any attempt to arrest Obi or harm his family would provoke widespread backlash. He emphasized that Obi had only exercised his democratic right to criticize governance, urging security agencies to investigate Morka's statements.

Obi himself addressed the issue, asserting his commitment to speaking truth to power despite threats. In a statement on his social media handle, he challenged anyone to pinpoint how his New Year message constituted crossing the line. Obi expressed concern over Nigeria’s drift toward authoritarianism, stating, “I will not be silenced while our nation transforms into a repressive regime suppressing free expression.”

Meanwhile, APC National Publicity Director Bala Ibrahim defended Morka’s remarks, describing them as non-threatening and urging Obi to caution his supporters. Ibrahim criticized the Obidient Movement for escalating the issue, calling for a more mature political discourse. The police spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, stated he was unaware of any threats to Obi or Morka, leaving the matter unresolved.
