Dozens of lives were lost on Thursday night in a horrifying assault by gunmen who stormed Umualaoma, Ndiakunwanta, and Ndiejezie communities in Arondizogu, Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State.
The attack, which occurred between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m., has left residents in shock and mourning, with many calling for urgent government intervention. Eyewitnesses reported that three unidentified gunmen arrived on a motorbike and opened fire indiscriminately on residents, particularly targeting those gathered in shops and open areas.
In Umualaoma, the assailants attacked youths playing a popular local board game, draft, killing several on the spot and leaving a trail of blood and devastation. Shop owners, customers, and bystanders were not spared, as the assailants shot randomly before speeding off into the night.
The motive behind the attack remains unknown, but the Imo State Police Command has linked the violence to operatives of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its militant wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).
Police spokesperson ASP Henry Okoye confirmed the incident, stating, “The senseless assault, which claimed the lives of over seven persons and left several others critically injured, was carried out by IPOB/ESN members. It is a barbaric, inhumane, and totally unacceptable act.”
Okoye also disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, has deployed tactical units and is personally leading operations to track down the attackers. He added that the affected communities are now under control, and preventive measures are in place to avert further violence.
In a related development, the civil society group Stand for Humanity Foundation has condemned the killings. Its founder, Chidiebube Okeoma, described the attack as "provocative and barbaric," and called on the government to act swiftly to restore peace in Imo State and across the Southeast.
He offered condolences to the grieving families and urged authorities to step up protection for civilians while ensuring justice for the victims.
As fear grips the once peaceful Arondizogu communities, residents are appealing for peace, security, and swift justice to prevent further bloodshed.
