President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of a federal university in Southern Kaduna, signaling a commitment to addressing the region's educational and developmental needs. Vice President Kashim Shettima disclosed this during a condolence visit to the Kukah family in the Ikulu Kingdom, Zangon Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State, following the death of His Highness Yohanna Sidi Kukah, the Agwom Akulu of Ikulu Chiefdom.
In a statement by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Shettima revealed that the federal government is also considering the establishment of a Federal Medical Centre in Kafanchan, Kaduna State. "We have reached out to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and he has consented to the establishment of a federal university in Southern Kaduna," Shettima said, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to the region's development.
The Vice President highlighted the appointment of General Christopher Musa as Chief of Defence Staff as an indication of the government's focus on the security and well-being of Southern Kaduna. He further commended Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, for promoting inclusive governance and pledged federal collaboration to improve infrastructure, particularly roads, in the region.
Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, representing the Kukah family, expressed gratitude to the Vice President for the visit and appealed for attention to the poor state of road infrastructure in the area. "It took you around three and a half hours to get here. The road is largely broken. I know you will remain a friend of this Ikulu nation and this community," the Bishop remarked.
The federal university is expected to enhance access to higher education in Southern Kaduna, while the proposed medical center will address critical healthcare challenges in the region.
