President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has committed to a national minimum wage higher than N60,000, following a meeting between the Federal Government and Organised Labour. The agreement was reached after an eight-hour meeting between government officials and Labour leaders, which was called in response to the indefinite strike called by Labour over the wage crisis.
The Tripartite Committee, comprising government, Labour, and employers, will meet daily for the next week to reach an agreement on the new minimum wage. As part of the agreement, Labour leaders will immediately call a meeting with their critical organs and take a decision on the one-day-old strike. The pact also ensures that the government will not victimise any union official who participated in the enforcement of the strike.
The meeting was attended by Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris and Minister of State (Labour and Employment) Nkeiruka Onyejeocha for the Federal Government, and Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Joe Ajaero and Trade Union Congress (TUC) President Festus Osifo for Labour. The agreement marks a significant step towards resolving the wage crisis and improving the living conditions of Nigerian workers.
