Tinubu Demands Strict Penalties for Civil Service Fraud

President Bola Tinubu has called for severe penalties for Nigerian civil servants who relocate abroad while continuing to draw salaries from Nigeria. Addressing the 2024 Civil Service Week Award and Gala Night on June 22, Tinubu emphasized the need for accountability and restitution for those involved in this fraudulent activity.

Tinubu stressed that those guilty of collecting salaries unlawfully after moving abroad must refund the money and that their supervisors and department heads should also face consequences for their complicity. He highlighted that such misconduct undermines the integrity and effectiveness of Nigeria’s governmental institutions.

In her address, Head of Civil Service Folashade Yemi-Esan outlined the implementation of a Reward and Recognition System aimed at boosting morale and productivity among civil servants. She commended President Tinubu for supporting recent measures to improve civil service welfare, including wage increases and housing initiatives.

Yemi-Esan emphasized the importance of attracting talented individuals to the civil service, noting recent government efforts to enhance employee welfare. She praised Tinubu's commitment to improving the workforce's welfare through provisional wage awards and ongoing efforts to review the minimum wage.
