Tinubu Loyalist or Buhari Loyalist? Governor Abdullahi Sule Fights Off Accusations of Playing a Double Game in APC Power Struggle

Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has pushed back hard against claims that he is playing a double game in his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s second term ambition, declaring that his loyalty to both the President and the All Progressives Congress (APC) remains unwavering.

The clarification comes in response to pointed criticism from the Chairman of the North Central APC Forum, Alhaji Saleh Zazagga, who accused the governor of sending mixed signals in the party’s internal power dynamics.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Addra, in Lafia on Monday, Governor Sule rejected the accusations as a "deliberate distortion of facts" and defended his recent remarks about former President Muhammadu Buhari.

“Governor Sule has consistently demonstrated his commitment to President Tinubu’s administration since its inception,” the statement read. “His comments at a recent ALGON event in Nasarawa State were historical acknowledgments, not political disloyalties.”

The controversy stems from Sule’s reference to Buhari as the “undisputed and symbolic leader of the defunct CPC bloc” within the APC — a remark Zazagga interpreted as undermining Tinubu’s authority and possibly signalling allegiance to a rival internal faction.

Sule’s camp, however, insists the governor was simply stating historical facts. “To imply that acknowledging Buhari’s legacy equals betrayal of Tinubu is both illogical and misleading,” the statement said.

The governor also emphasized his support for APC unity, citing his recent efforts to encourage former Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami and other legacy CPC members to stay within the party fold as aligned with Tinubu’s inclusive political vision.

“If the critics now deny Buhari’s role as CPC’s symbolic leader, they owe Nigerians an explanation, not political mischief,” the statement continued.
