ABUJA— President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Armed Forces to review ongoing security operations nationwide, including the deployment of advanced military hardware and surveillance equipment, in a renewed effort to eliminate terrorist groups.
The directive comes in the wake of a deadly attack in Darajamal community, Bama Local Government Area of Borno State, where Boko Haram insurgents killed several civilians and soldiers on Friday night.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, in a condolence message on Monday, expressed deep sympathy to Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, the people of Borno, and the Nigerian military.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to Governor Zulum, the people of Borno State, and the Nigerian military over the tragic loss of our compatriots. These deaths have left the entire nation in collective grief, but we are confident that justice will be served for the bereaved families,” Shettima said in a statement by his spokesman, Stanley Nkwocha.
The Vice President reiterated President Tinubu’s directive for the Armed Forces to intensify their strategies, pointing to the government’s recent approval for the acquisition of additional drones and surveillance tools to strengthen counter-terrorism operations.
Shettima further disclosed that the Federal Government is considering the establishment of state police, stressing Tinubu’s position that peculiar security challenges in certain states require localized forces familiar with the terrain, culture, and grassroots dynamics.
Governor Zulum had on Saturday visited Darajamal to commiserate with affected families, describing the attack as a grave tragedy that underscores the persistent threat of insurgency in the North-East.
