Tinubu to Swear in Disu as Substantive Inspector-General on Wednesday

President Bola Tinubu will on Wednesday formally swear in Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police, following his unanimous endorsement by the Nigeria Police Council.

The swearing-in is scheduled to take place during the Federal Executive Council meeting at the State House in Abuja, according to the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

The Police Council meeting, presided over by Tinubu on Monday, was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, several state governors and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, retired DIG Hashimu Argungu, in line with constitutional requirements.

Other top government officials present included Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, Minister of Police Affairs Ibrahim Gaidam, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, and Head of Service Esther Walson-Jack.

During the meeting, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu praised Disu’s track record, particularly his tenure as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos from 2015 to 2021, where he gained recognition for effective crime control.

Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule also commended the President’s choice, describing Disu’s appointment as a merit-based decision grounded in his professional record.

Wike, who previously served as Rivers State Governor, recalled Disu’s time as Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department and anti-kidnapping unit in Rivers between 2014 and 2015. He also noted Disu’s later role as Commissioner of Police for the FCT Command, where he was credited with strengthening security operations in the territory.

Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah seconded the motion endorsing Disu’s appointment.

Disu’s confirmation comes just a week after he was named Acting IGP following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun.

Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos State, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police. He holds qualifications in public administration, forensic investigation, criminology, security studies, legal psychology and entrepreneurship.

Before his latest appointment, he served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Special Protection Unit and the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Lagos.

Like his predecessor, Disu previously worked closely with Tinubu during his time as Lagos State Governor between 1999 and 2007. While Egbetokun served as Chief Security Officer, Disu was the President’s Aide-de-Camp.
