Tragedy struck on Thursday morning as no fewer than 18 travellers were feared dead in a ghastly accident on the Umuahia-Enugu axis of the Port Harcourt Enugu Highway. The accident, which occurred at a police checkpoint around the Lokpanta area of Abia State in the early hours of the day, involved an 18-seater commercial bus and a truck.
According to eyewitness Mr Bananas Okereke, the commercial bus was awaiting police clearance at the checkpoint when the truck driver lost control and collided with the bus, instantly killing the driver and all passengers on board. As of 8:20 am, the bodies of the victims were still scattered at the scene.
The tragic incident has sparked outrage among bus drivers and other motorists, who have blocked the road in protest. They are demanding that the policemen responsible for the accident be brought back to the scene for justice. The protesters, including colleagues of the bus driver and other road users, have vowed to remain at the scene until Governor Alex Otti visits to address the situation.
The accident has once again highlighted the need for improved road safety measures and stricter enforcement to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
