A fatal road accident has claimed the life of a female prospective corps member on her way to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Afikpo North Local Government Area, Ebonyi State.

The deceased was traveling with 11 other prospective corps members in a 14-seater commercial bus when the tragic incident occurred. While her identity remains unconfirmed, reports indicate she succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash, while her colleagues and other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries.

The Ebonyi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Igwe Henry, confirmed the accident but noted that his officers arrived after the victims had been evacuated.

“At the time our men from Amasiri Unit Command got the information and arrived at the scene, the victims had already been rescued,” he said.

The accident reportedly occurred at 2:00 PM along the Amasiri-Okigwe route, specifically at Amenu village in Okposi. The collision involved a Toyota commercial bus and a Mercedes-Benz tipper truck.

Ebonyi State NYSC Coordinator, Foluke Oladeinde, expressed deep sorrow over the incident, speaking from the hospital where the injured were receiving treatment. “I am not in the right frame of mind to talk now. Yes, the accident occurred, but I cannot talk right now,” she said.

Authorities are yet to release further details about the crash or confirm the condition of the other victims. The incident casts a shadow of grief over what was meant to be the beginning of a new chapter for the young corps members.
