Delta

A devastating boat accident in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State has left at least five passengers dead and 20 others missing, the Delta State Police Command has confirmed.

According to state Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, the accident, which occurred on Monday evening, involved boats ferrying passengers returning from a burial ceremony.

Six survivors were rescued and are currently receiving treatment in the hospital.

Eyewitnesses Blame Poor Visibility, Lack of Life Jackets

Residents and eyewitnesses attributed the fatal crash to poor visibility, as the accident happened at night, making navigation difficult for the boat operators.

Additionally, many passengers were not wearing life jackets, further increasing the risk of drowning.

A local resident, Emmanuel Okoro, who witnessed the incident, described the scene as chaotic and heartbreaking:

“People were screaming for help. Some managed to swim to safety, but many others disappeared beneath the water.”

Rescue Efforts Ongoing

Emergency responders and local volunteers are actively searching for the missing victims, while authorities continue to assess the extent of casualties and damages.

The Delta State Government and Marine authorities are expected to investigate the cause of the mishap and enforce stricter safety measures for water transportation.

This tragedy has sparked renewed concerns over maritime safety in Nigeria, especially regarding the use of life jackets and nighttime boat travel risks.
