At least 13 people lost their lives in a mining site collapse in Bassa Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State, confirmed Dr. Joshua Riti, Chairman of Bassa LGA, on Monday. The incident, which occurred last Saturday, affected a site near the borders of Bassa, Jos South, and Jos North LGAs.
Expressing deep sorrow, Riti noted that seven of the victims were from Bassa. "This is an unfortunate incident," he said, describing the victims as young people who ventured out to make a living amid challenging economic conditions. "They went out to put their energies to good use to sustain and meet up with the current economic hardship in the country but met their untimely death."
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that most of those who died were youths between the ages of 18 and 30, highlighting the devastating impact on local families and communities. Riti extended his condolences to the grieving families and called for strengthened safety measures in mining areas to prevent such tragedies in the future.
