A pedestrian lost their life in a tragic accident after a truck suffered brake failure at the Iyana Ishashi U-turn in Lagos State on Tuesday. According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) spokesperson, Taofiq Adebayo, the incident occurred as the truck attempted a U-turn toward Mile 2. The truck, unable to stop due to failed brakes, veered off the road and struck the pedestrian, killing them instantly.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the Howo tipper, which lacked proper registration details, was speeding excessively before the driver lost control. The catastrophic brake failure and the driver’s recklessness heightened the collision's impact, leading to the pedestrian's untimely death. LASTMA described the event as a devastating and avoidable tragedy.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep condolences to the family of the deceased. Speaking through Adebayo, he stressed the importance of vehicle maintenance and adherence to traffic rules to prevent such unfortunate incidents. He called on motorists to prioritize safety and exercise caution on Lagos roads.
In a related development, PUNCH Metro reported multiple accidents across Lagos and Ogun states earlier this week, resulting in two fatalities and six injuries. The incidents occurred at different locations, including the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Third Mainland Bridge, and Fadeyi, highlighting ongoing road safety challenges in the region.
