Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja has issued a strong warning to Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), threatening to adjourn his trial indefinitely if he continues to delay the proceedings. Kanu's lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, had earlier presented conditions for his client's participation in the trial, including the restoration of his bail, relocation from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), and free access to his lawyers. However, the prosecuting lawyer, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), objected to these requests, calling them frivolous and unmeritorious.
Justice Nyako set the ruling on Ejimakor's requests for May 20 but emphasized the need for progress in the case. She insisted that the prosecution must start its case by calling witnesses on Wednesday. The judge stated, "It is either we open this trial today by prosecution calling witnesses or I adjourn this matter indefinitely till the time you are ready for trial. You cannot continue to hold the court to ransom." She highlighted the consequences of adjourning the trial indefinitely and urged Kanu and his legal team to make a choice.
Currently, Kanu, his legal team, and some relatives are in court deliberating on the options available to them. The judge has temporarily suspended proceedings to allow them time to consider their decision.
