A tricycle rider lost his life on Wednesday after a truck rammed into three vehicles at Ekoro Junction along the Abule-Egba/Command Road in Lagos.
According to eyewitnesses, the accident happened early in the morning when the truck reportedly lost its brakes and veered into a tricycle and two other vehicles.
One witness, identified as Abiodun, said the impact of the crash crushed the tricyclist’s head and left two other drivers badly injured.
“It was a terrible sight,” he said. “The trailer lost control and hit a tricycle and two other vehicles. The tricyclist died instantly, and about three people were seriously injured before the police and LASTMA officers arrived to evacuate the victims.”
A police officer familiar with the incident confirmed that the injured were drivers of the two other vehicles involved, adding that the tricyclist died on the spot.
In a statement, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, said preliminary findings showed that brake failure caused the accident.
The vehicles involved were listed as a six-tyre trailer (AGL 514 XD), a Honda Pilot (FST 992 DV), a Toyota Camry (EKY 753 JA), and an unregistered tricycle.
According to Taofiq,
“Investigations revealed that the trailer, which was fully loaded, suffered brake failure, causing the driver to lose control. The truck crushed the tricycle, hit a Honda Pilot, jumped the median, and collided with a Toyota Camry and nearby property.”
LASTMA officers and other emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, rescuing two victims who were trapped and confirming the tricyclist’s death. Traffic was temporarily disrupted but later eased after diversions were made.
Reacting to the tragedy, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki described the crash as both “tragic and preventable,” stressing the importance of speed control and regular vehicle maintenance.
“This incident could have been avoided if there had been stricter adherence to speed limits,” he said, while offering condolences to the family of the deceased and wishing the injured a speedy recovery.

Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), added that the truck was carrying beverages and bottled water when it fell on the tricycle, which was parked by the roadside.
He confirmed that one person died while two others sustained injuries.
“The truck suffered a mechanical fault while descending the road. The driver tried to stop but couldn’t. Sadly, the tricyclist lost his life when the truck crashed into the parked tricycle and two cars,” Oke-Osanyintolu explained.
Fatal accidents involving trucks and trailers have become increasingly common in recent times across different parts of the country, often resulting in loss of lives and injuries to road users.
