U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose a 25 per cent tariff on steel and aluminum imports into the United States.

“Any steel coming to the United States is going to have them, 25 per cent tariff,” Trump told journalists traveling with him on Sunday. When asked about tariffs on aluminum, he confirmed, “25 per cent for both.”

The president also stated that additional reciprocal tariffs would be announced in the coming week, with an official declaration expected by Tuesday or Wednesday.

“Very simply, if they charge us, we charge them,” Trump said, adding that the tariffs would take effect almost immediately.

Meanwhile, U.S. tariffs of 10 per cent on Chinese goods have been in place since February 4. Planned 25 per cent tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada were temporarily suspended for 30 days, following commitments by both countries to increase border security measures.

Trump, who won the November presidential election, campaigned on reducing U.S. trade deficits by imposing high tariffs on foreign goods. During his first term (2017–2021), he implemented several trade duties as part of his protectionist economic policies.
