Two Dead, 19 Injured in Lokoja–Okene Road Crash

Two people have been confirmed dead while 19 others sustained injuries in a road accident along the Lokoja–Okene highway on Tuesday.

The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Kogi State, Tenimu Etuku, confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Lokoja. He explained that four of the injured victims suffered varying degrees of injuries, including bruises and fractures, and were immediately taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

According to Etuku, the crash involved a commercial bus that departed Kano on Monday evening and was travelling to Auchi and Benin before the accident occurred around 9:40 a.m. on Tuesday. He attributed the cause of the lone accident to excessive speeding.

FRSC rescue officials evacuated the victims from the scene and deposited the two deceased passengers at the morgue of the Kogi Specialist Hospital in Lokoja.

The sector commander advised motorists to exercise caution on highways and strictly obey traffic rules, especially during the festive season when road traffic is usually heavy.

He stressed that adherence to speed limits and traffic regulations would help reduce accidents and prevent the needless loss of lives.

Meanwhile, another fatal accident was earlier reported along the Isara-Remo section of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency said the crash occurred at about 3:00 a.m.

Officials disclosed that two passengers in a Suzuki bus were found dead by TRACE operatives and police officers during a rescue operation around 7:00 a.m.
