UCH Resident Doctors Strike Over Brutal Assault on Colleague, Demand Apology

The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan has initiated a three-day strike in response to an alleged assault on one of their members by relatives of a patient. In a statement by UCH ARD President, Dr. John Oladapo, the doctors are demanding a public apology from those who assaulted their colleague and caused injuries to him on Sunday.

Dr. Oladapo has called on the hospital to enhance its security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. He described the assault as a deliberate and planned attack, explaining that the doctor was attending to a Sickle Cell patient in crisis when two individuals confronted him in the consulting room and began assaulting him.

The doctor attempted to flee, but the assailants pursued him and continued the attack. Although security personnel intervened and rescued the doctor, he sustained injuries along with psychological and emotional distress. The mother of the patient who tried to intervene was also assaulted during the incident.
