The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has officially banned all forms of sign-out celebrations by graduating students.
This was announced in a circular issued on Tuesday by the university’s Registrar, Mr. Ademola Bobola, in Benin City.
According to the circular addressed to the university community, management warned that any student who violates the directive will face serious disciplinary actions, including rustication, expulsion, or even withdrawal of certificate.
Bobola explained that the decision was made during a management meeting on Monday, where the university reaffirmed an earlier Senate resolution banning such celebrations on campus.
“No sign-out celebration of any kind, including signing on T-shirts or playing of music, will be tolerated,” the circular read.
He added that the university will not tolerate any form of disorderly conduct or unauthorised gatherings during or after examinations.
The statement also noted that unauthorised vehicles would not be allowed into the campus during the final week of the second-semester exams, and that large gatherings around faculties, schools, or institutes after examinations are strictly prohibited.
Furthermore, photographers have been barred from setting up photo stands or galleries for sign-out activities.
Bobola also urged parents and guardians of final-year students to avoid visiting the campus during the final examination days, especially on the last day.
He stressed that the decision aims to maintain order, discipline, and academic decorum across the university.
“Any violation will attract severe disciplinary sanctions, including withdrawal of certificate, rustication, or expulsion,” he warned.

UNIBEN now joins other institutions — including Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Federal University Lafia, IBB University, Kaduna Polytechnic, and the University of Port Harcourt — which have also banned sign-out celebrations.
Sign-out is a popular tradition among final-year students, where they write farewell messages on white shirts and celebrate the end of their academic journey.
