UNIBEN Student Shot Dead by Gunmen Outside Campus Gate

A yet-to-be-identified student of the University of Benin was shot dead by suspected gunmen on Sunday night while driving out of the institution’s main gate at Ugbowo.

According to eyewitnesses, the victim was attacked at close range by masked gunmen while inside his JLK Mercedes-Benz vehicle. The assailants reportedly fled the scene immediately after the shooting.

Sources said the student had completed an examination in the Political Science Department about an hour before the attack occurred.

Two other occupants of the vehicle survived the incident but sustained injuries. They were rushed to the university’s health care centre for treatment.

A student who witnessed the incident said the attack appeared carefully targeted.

“They shot him at close range, and there was no way he could have survived. Two other people inside the vehicle were injured and taken to the school health centre,” the student said.

Operatives from the Nigeria Police Force later arrived at the scene and evacuated the victim’s body.

The Divisional Police Officer of the Ugbowo Division, SP Emmanuel, confirmed the incident but stated that details surrounding the attack were still unclear.

As of the time of filing this report, the Edo State Police Command had yet to release an official statement on the killing.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident on campus, another student was reportedly chased with a machete at the Social Science Lecture Theatre on Saturday but escaped unharmed.
