US Embassy in Nigeria Revises Immigration Visa Process, Effective January 2025

Visa

The United States Embassy in Nigeria has announced a significant revision to its immigration visa application process, set to take effect from January 1, 2025. Under the new system, applicants scheduled for interviews will be required to visit the Consulate General in Lagos at least twice during the visa application process.

The embassy shared this update on its official X (formerly Twitter) page, explaining that the change is aimed at improving preparation for visa interviews and reducing delays in processing immigrant visas.

Two-Visit Process

  1. First Visit – In-Person Document Review
    • Applicants will meet with a consular staff member to review required documents.
    • This step ensures that all necessary documentation is in order before the visa interview, allowing applicants time to resolve any deficiencies and avoid delays.
  2. Second Visit – Visa Interview
    • The second visit involves an interview with a Consular Officer.
    • The National Visa Center (NVC) will schedule this interview for applicants.

Applicants who fail to complete the In-Person Document Review before their scheduled interview will be required to reschedule their appointments, the embassy noted.

Previous Changes

This update follows an earlier announcement in July 2024, when the embassy revealed a transition to a new visa services provider for operations at its Abuja and Lagos consulates, effective August 26, 2024.

The U.S. Embassy continues to encourage applicants to monitor its official website and social media channels for further updates and guidance on the new process.
