Kimberly Cheatle, the Director of the US Secret Service, has resigned amidst growing criticism over the agency's handling of a recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. Her resignation comes a day after facing intense scrutiny from lawmakers who questioned the agency's competency in protecting Trump.
In a letter obtained by NBC News, Cheatle expressed her regret over the situation, stating, "In light of recent events, it is with a heavy heart that I have made the difficult decision to step down as your director." She acknowledged the agency's shortcomings, noting that it "fell short" of its mission to "protect our nation’s leaders."
President Joe Biden, in a statement, expressed gratitude for Cheatle's years of public service, highlighting her leadership qualities and integrity. "As a leader, it takes honour, courage, and incredible integrity to take full responsibility for an organisation tasked with one of the most challenging jobs in public service," Biden remarked.
The President also indicated that a new director would be appointed soon to lead the agency.
