Violence erupted during a well-attended meeting of All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State, ahead of the April 24 campaign kick-off and the September 21, 2024 governorship election. The meeting, held at the private residence of Ehiozuwa Agbonayinma, a former governorship aspirant, was interrupted by hoodlums and thugs who invaded the venue, injuring several APC leaders and members. Some of the injured are reportedly in critical condition in hospitals in Benin, while valuable items, including vehicles, were vandalized and stolen.

Agbonayinma, addressing reporters in Benin City following the incident, condemned the violence, describing it as unacceptable in politics. He expressed determination to continue his political activities despite the attack, emphasizing that he and his supporters would not be intimidated. He also lamented the loss of his son and the ongoing trauma he is experiencing.

Security operatives, including personnel from the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Edo State Police Command, were deployed to the venue to restore order. Following their intervention, the stakeholders resumed their meeting. Agbonayinma vowed that those responsible for the attack would be held accountable for the damages caused.

The incident highlights the tense political atmosphere in the lead-up to the governorship election in Edo State. It underscores the need for peaceful and non-violent political activities as the election approaches.
